Summary
make a long trek up the Arun Kosi, Barun Valley, protected
as Nepal’s newest national park. A rough trail leads past
Yak pastures and glaciers to the foot of Makalu.
You can
make an outstanding trek in eastern Nepal from either Hile
or Tumlingtar by walking north up the Arun Kosi to Sedua
and Num, then crossing Shipton La (426m) into the upper
Barun Khola valley for a close look at Makalu and
Chhamlang, see the warning on this page regarding the
altitude gain on some sections of this trek. The trek to
Makalu base camp visits one of the most remote and
unfrequented areas of Nepal. The Barun Valley is part of a
huge international protected area under an agreement
between Nepal and China.
Some
groups have attempted an even wilder trek by crossing
Sherpani Col and west Col into the upper Hongu basin.
This high-altitude route requires extensive mountaineering
experience and equipment and has proved itself difficult
and potentially very dangerous.
