In comparison to
Lower Dolpo
far fewer trekkers enter the heavily restricted upper
Dolpo section of Shey Phoksundo National Park. To enter
this remote and sparsely populated area a spherical
restricted area permit must be obtained.
A government appointed liaison officer must also accompany
the group. The main attraction of the area of the area is
the wild and pristine lands cape, Which is unlike most
other parts of the Nepal Himalayan Geographically it is a
part of the Tibetan Platen and is generally dry, cold and
sparsely vegetated, some of the southwestern parts of the
protected area are forested but in general the country is
composed of rolling hills with only stunted bushes where
any plant late exists.
The
park and particularly the northern part, is home to many
rare and endangered animal species including snow leopard,
musk deer and blue sheep. The northern part of Dolpo is
usually called inner Dolpo and has long had an aura of
mysticism about it, largely because of the meta physical
discussions of the region in Peter Matthiessen’s book The
snow leopard. Shey was closed to foreigners until 1992 one
story cities the reason for closure as the large-scale
theft of statues from monasteries several years ago
